MAYBELLINE NEW YORK CONSCIOUS TOGETHER

We make makeup. We’re also committed to make change, but it takes all of us, product by product, process by process, step by step. We are committed to be Conscious Together.

As the #1 make up brand in the world, we’re inspired to make change to create a more responsible business model. Therefore, we are excited to introduce our Conscious Together program, consisting of an ambitious set of packaging, disposal, production, and formula goals that we aim to achieve by 2030.

  1. CONSCIOUS PACKAGING

    WHERE WE ARE TODAY

We have been working hard to find solutions to use recycled materials in our product.

    HOW WE DID THIS

    • Since 2018, we have replaced 600 tons of virgin plastic, that’s more than 3x as heavy as the Statue of Liberty (without its base), with recycled plastic for the many components we use in our products.

    • Our Green Edition collection’s packaging contains components that are made with up to 95% recycled materials.

    • We use 50% recycled plastic for our blistercards in all our carded products assembled in our US plants.

    • We light weighted Color Sensational Lipstick primary packaging in the US by 10% and the EU by 14%.

    • For glass products, all glass bottles on foundations and nail polishes are made with a minimum of 20% PCR. Beginning in 2022, we will transition our opaque tubes to be made with a minimum of 24% PCR material in the EU and US, for example Instant Perfector Matte.

    OUR GOAL

By 2030, all Maybelline plastic packaging will be made from 100% recycled plastic

  2. Conscious Production

    WHERE WE ARE TODAY

73% of Maybelline owned production facilities are carbon neutral*.

    HOW WE DID THIS

We reduced our energy consumption by implementing energy efficiency measures such as LED lighting to high-efficiency compressors to LEED certification and moved to renewable energy through onsite solar panels, utilization of biomass and offsite renewable energy projects to achieve carbon neutrality.

    OUR GOAL

By 2025, we will achieve carbon neutrality in all our owned sites by improving energy efficiency and using 100% renewable energy. By 2030, we will reduce carbon emissions from our full product lifecycle by 50%** We will partner with our suppliers, manufacturers, merchandisers and consumers to reduce the amount of carbon emissions associated with our products.

*We have achieved carbon neutrality for scopes 1 and 2 emissions inclusive of 8/11 manufacturing facilities representing 79% of MNY’s overall production in 2020. **Compared to 2016 baseline in scopes 1,2 and 3.

  3. Conscious Formulas

    WHERE WE ARE TODAY

    Natural Origin Ingredients

Our first step was the launch of our Green Edition range, which contains a minimum of 70% natural-origin ingredients. We consider an ingredient to be of natural-origin if it is unchanged from its natural state or has undergone processing yet still retains greater than 50% of its molecular structure from the original natural source.

    Sustainable Sourcing

We sustainably source the following ingredients: Shea Butter, Cocoa Butter, Rice Bran Oil and Sesame Seed Oil. This approach ensures that raw materials of plant origin come from supply chains which respect biodiversity and help limit their environmental impact.

    OUR GOAL

By 2030, 95% of our ingredients will be bio-based, derived from abundant minerals or circular processes. We are working with our Research & Innovation teams to leverage the power of Green Science for the formulation of high-performance ingredients of natural origin, using more responsible processes for transformation, extraction, or fermentation.

  4. Conscious Disposal

    WHERE WE ARE TODAY

Today, recycling systems are not able to accept most make up because make up packaging is too small (less than 20 ml) and is often made of a mix of different materials, all of which are disruptors to recycling.

    OUR GOAL

We’ve had our fill of makeup landfill! So, our ambition is to help make cosmetics recycling accessible to all , to help ensure that packaging finds a new life after use. That’s why, in partnership with the global sustainability consultancy South Pole, we will invest to help develop makeup recycling technologies and processes
